Is Facebook Becoming a Publisher?

Facebook’s big play has been on user-generated content: get your users to do the hard work for you. So, I have to say that I’m a bit perplexed by one of the social media giant’s latest moves. It launched a page devoted to U.S. politics, which seems to be a mix of status updates, links to other sites and other quasi-random resources. What’s interesting is that the Facebook team picks up some of the burden of managing this … a distinct departure from its strategy so far.

I’m probably making too much of this, but if Facebook is planning to do more projects like this, it will be moving into the traditional publishing space. And let’s face it: traditional publishing is a pretty shitty place to be right now.

North Korea Looking for an Ear

Copy of dprkThe reclusive Communist state wants to talk – but only to the United States. After a year of silence, it’s willing to revisit the issue of nuclear disarmament, but it wants one-on-one time instead of the usual six-party format.

A DPRK official visited the United States last week, a rarity, in what has been called a “’charm’ offensive” by Reuters. The country is desperate for money and aid.

Reuters reports that a DPRK Foreign Ministry spokesman said to the Korea Central News Agency, “The conclusion we have reached is that the direct parties, which are the North and the United States, must first sit down and find a rational solution.”

The writing on the wall

dsc04513My guide, Mustafa, was incredibly helpful. In addition to keeping me from getting hopelessly lost, he was able to explain the subtleties of Marrakech to me. I saw what looked like rather organized graffiti and asked the obvious question: “What does it mean?”

Apparently, it’s political. And, it’s not really graffiti.

My Vote Doesn’t Count

dsc03723Yes, I voted this year. But, as I checked off my choices, it became apparent ot me that my vote really didn’t matter. Sure, this doesn’t apply to the good folks of Pennsylvania, Florida or Ohio, but here in New York, for me: nothing.

I know this is an unpopular stance to take, particularly after an election characterized by long lines at the polls. But, I think it’s a fair question.

Palin for Abortion?

Call the folks in the white coats

Call the folks in the white coats

The poor veep hopeful just can’t get it right. When asked where her vote went in the Alaska senate race — in particular, if she supported the disgraced Sen. Ted Stevens — Sarah Palin replied, “I am also exercising my right to privacy, and I don’t have to tell anybody who I vote for, nobody does, and that’s really cool about America.”

I didn’t know she had a right to “privacy,” at least, that’s what those in her party would say. The right to privacy is fundamental to Roe v Wade, and it is typically code for being pro-choice.

So, has Sarah had a change of heart?

Sarah Palin Wants to Help Me

tomwritingcigar2Interviewed at her polling place, the veep hopeful cited the media when asked if she had any regrets about her campaign. I, for one, am happy to have the assistance of such a great political mind. After all, that’s what journalism needs: more guidance from politicians. So, I invite Sarah Palin to call or e-mail me at any time. I would appreciate her time, her advice and her commitment.

Get her penetrating insights after the jump.

Is Liberalism a Mental Illness?

A friend of mine is, like me, something of a tree-hugger. So, she wrote a letter to a US Senate candidate in Michigan, where she lives, to support a clean energy policy. The nutjob, Mike Nikitin, is running with the US Taxpayers Party of MI / Constitution Party. No, I will not run a link to his website or that of his party. His reply to my friend’s thoughtful letter was nothing short of shocking:

Dear [name removed],

If climate change is a ‘serious concern’ for you, I’m afraid I have serious concerns as to whether you are mentally competent.

Scientists can’t predict the weather tomorrow 100% accurately and you think they know what our weather will be like in 50 years?

One volcano eruption puts more polution in the atmoshere than all the cars ever have combined. To suggest we are hurting the planet to the point we are affecting the weather globally is insane.

The dinosaurs were here for millions of years, and didn’t build one SUV. The Earth killed them.

When I was in high school, human pollution was supposed to cause the new Ice Age by the year 2000. It is the same group of communist anti-capitalist anti-American traitors pushing the same agenda – just with a different threat.

I urge you to use your brain and quit accepting every crisis the left promotes to rob you of your money and freedom.

Sincerely,

Mike Nikitin

US Senate Candidate – MI,

US Taxpayers Party of MI / Constitution Party

My friend tried to engage this wacko–

Well Mike,

I see that you are a scary person and I am glad I do not have to see you in person.  Having had a parent in politics while I was growing up, I can see that you would not be a very good one.  Telling someone, who would repeat what you say, that they are mentally incompetant is not the way to gain the confidence of a voter.

I will pray that you are able to find the help you so obviously need.

His reply was even more insane!

I stand for returning this nation back to the Constitution – that made us great – and I am the scary one?

I stand for returning citizen’s property and rights back to them – and I am the scary one?

If you had a parent in politics, it was probably a socialist (Democrat) that pandered and lied to get votes. You are right, I don’t make a good one of those.

Liberalism is a mental illness. Not one liberal policy has ever worked in the history of mankind, and yet people still follow the socialist/communist mantra.

I call that a mental illness. No amount of truth, proof or history stops liberals from voting for their own eventual death or slavery.

If you pray for anyone, pray for yourself. You are the one with the sickness.

My site has my platform and the proof as to why I am right and every liberal is wrong. Pray for the strength to face the truth, and then come join me to save this country before it is too late.
