The Secret to Successful Travel Blogging

I’m sure most of the other travel bloggers out there would cite some sort of hunger for adventure or yearning for excitement as essential to the trade. You need to be down for anything on a moment’s notice. That’s bullshit. You can actually be a fantastic travel blogger without those qualities (I would say, in many cases, those characteristics are actually impediments to kickass travel blogging). Instead, the key is to be able to see meaning in everything you do and turn it into a story.

When I walk through my apartment, I don’t see stuff – I see experiences. The painting hanging over my couch? That’s from the $1 auction stunt with artist Nelson Diaz. The Casey’s coffee mug? It kicks off memories of a consulting assignment I had outside Toronto back in 2002 and how we used to play “credit card roulette” to see who would pick up the tab at dinner (Casey’s is a restaurant where we used to have lunch). And each of these stories triggers a hundred more … which is probably why nobody visits my apartment.

[From the Wandering Blogger] New Trader Travel Article: Adventure in South Africa

Check out my latest travel article for TraderDaily.com. In “Air, Land and Water– Live Risk in All Elements,” you will live on the edge. Fly in a fighter jet, drive a Formula 1 race car and SCUBA dive with sharks. If you are rich and desperate for a thrill, this is where you’ll find it.

This is an Alexander & Kent Extreme Adventure trip, so it’s far from cheap. But, for those with the means, it should not be missed.

A Requiem for Gridskipper

Gridskipper used to be a kickass travel blog. But, the guys at Gawker wanted to “rationalize” its portflio of blogs, and Gridskipper’s performance wasn’t enough to keep it in the family. It’s a damned shame. Now that Gridskipper is part of the Curbed family, there aren’t as many updates. Most of the content consists of links to other stories; there isn’t much original content to go with it. So, the cut the best part of Gridskipper.

Maybe someday they’ll link to a few more of my articles. They had a link to a piece I wrote for Cigar Report on De La Concha’s cigar dinners, but it got lost in the conversion from Gawker to Curbed, much to my chagrin. But, such is life. Fuck ’em.

Check out Montreal

My latest TraderDaily.com travel article has been posted. I had an absolute blast when I was up there last month, and I look forward to going again soon.

J’aime la Montreal!

So, take a look at the article on traveling to Montreal, then book a quick trip up there. If you’re in Boston or New York, Montreal isn’t too far up north.

While you’re up there, go grab a hot dog. They have decent dogs at the pool hall (there aren’t any pool tables there any more, just hot dogs) on St Denis. That’s exactly what I’m doing in the picture.

With fall coming, you probably think it will be cold as hell up there. You’d be absolutely wrong. Don’t think; let me do that for you. It’s beautiful up there well into October and probably into November. The air is nice and crisp.
