Microsoft and Yahoo! inked a 10-year search partnership in the United States, and they’re hoping to ride that deal around the world. The two technology companies are trying to chip away at search engine giant Google‘s market share in the space. If all goes well, Microsoft thinks the deal will close early next year, even though there are some regulatory hurdles to clear.
According to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, “It’s possible that we will extend that partnership [with Yahoo] outside the U.S.,”continuing, “We will have to wait and see if we can get approval and consummate that partnership inside the U.S. first.”
Microsoft is looking for new ways to feed its top line. This year has been a tough one for the Redmond, Washington-based software company, which has laid off (net) 3,000 people this year and just announced that another 800 positions would be cut.
