What I’m Reading: Atlas Shrugged

Posted by migrantblogger on July 6, 2008

I’m rereading Atlas Shrugged, and I’m not sure how I feel about it. For me, Ayn Rand is like crack. I know her stuff isn’t good for me, but I just can’t get enough of it! I think her brand of libertarian thinking is ideal but unattainable. On the other hand, the philosophy underlying her novels is weak and underdeveloped. But, I still love this stuff.

You are “not sure” how you feel about Atlas Shrugged but you “know” that it isn’t good for you? How do you know that? You feel that Rand’s ideal is unattainable–isn’t that a contradiction? If you know that Objectivism is underdeveloped, shouldn’t you give an example so as not to appear to be so confused? Be specific. Just what is it you love about “the stuff?”

Read more. Think more. Define your terms more. Check your premises more. What does it mean to check premises? What ideas are you using to say to yourself, “this isn’t good for me”? Have you adopted a morality that Rand contradicts? Is that morality now your standard so, on experiencing another all you can do is say to yourself “this isn’t good for me”? What if it IS good for you but, having adopted a corrupt morality, you reject it? For the rest of your life you will be ruled by the corrupt morality, corrupt politics, etc. simply because you, today, did not give Rand’s arguments the consideration they deserve. Why didn’t you? Was it because, what you believe now is the way you grew up? Was it because everyone else thinks the same way you grew up? Was it because other people say Rand is nonsense, has wooden characters, and has certain contradictions? She doesn’t, which you can discover IF you take the time to understand her epistemology.

    All the best,
    Richard

“Hail objectivism!”? Ayn Rand would more likely say, “Hail the human spirit!” or “Hail the people of accomplishment!” Reread The Fountainhead. Maybe next time you’ll get it right.
